Libraries in Our 'Hood & Beyond

Libraries Change, they have to! It's an essential tenet of our work as professional librarians. What doesn't, and likely will never, change is the nature of what librarians do and what libraries provide. We provide access to information; we provide skills and tools to access, manage, and evaluate information; we provide a virtual and a physical place to do all of these things regardless of ability to pay; and, we provide the place and context for students of all ages and subjects to put skills and education to work as life long learners.

Belmont needs a new library to continue providing these services, to continue supporting our students and our schools, to continue supporting families, seniors, teens and everyone in between. The purpose of this blog is to speak to what libraries are these days, to show what the best ones are doing for their users, to show not just why it would be nice to have a new building...but how fundamental good library services are to the quality of life in this town.

It is my opinion that most look on the library as that nice bunch of books and those nice folks on Concord Ave...but that is not even a tenth of the story. Stay tuned for more posts that will detail scenarios from what we could do, to stories about our users and how they use the BPL. There are many!

  1. Inspiring! I'm on my way to my public library tomorrow. Great job, library trustee.
